‘Born, Raise and Tuned to Aspire
Excellence’
Mosaic was established by talented and
accomplished solo violinist Dennis Lau,
a UCSI Bachelors of Music graduate under
the Newcastle Australian Music Degree
Program. Dennis began playing the piano
at the tender age of 3 and became one
of the youngest ever in Malaysia to
reach Grade 8 by the age of 11. He then
went on to obtain several diplomas in
classical piano including the ATCL,
A.M.U.S.A, DipABRSM and LGSM (hons).
Dennis’s violin training started
at the age of 8, under the tutelage
of Miss Nora Kim and Mr. Andrew Chye
and obtained the ATCL Diploma at age
of 15. This protégé was
the Award Winner for Outstanding Performance
for the world class Trinity College
London, LTCL examinations and subsequently
in the following year, was awarded for
Outstanding Performance for Violin for
the Trinity College London FTCL examinations.
‘Music is my business’
Although comparatively a rookie in the
local music scene and in contemporary/jazz
rhythms, Dennis has already shared the
stage and worked with Malaysia’s
most prominent and popular artists and
celebrities, such as the likes of Mia
Palencia, Luis Pragasam, James Boyle,
Sean Ghazi, Fransisca Peters, Jaclyn
Victor, Noryn Aziz, Atilia Haron, Ning
Baizura, Amber Chia, Winnie Loo, Arianna
Teoh and Maya Karin, to name a few.
Dennis was a guest performer on ntv7’s
Thursday Night Live show hosted by Harith
Iskandar and played the opening act
for the finale of reality show, ‘Star
Celeb’ hosted by Miki Choong.
Dennis had the privilege to perform
on stage and was also the strings ensemble
coordinator for Taiwanese pop star David
Tao’s (Love Can) World Tour 2006
held at the National Stadium, Bukit
Jalil. Coincidentally, his cousin Joanne
Yeoh was also the solo violinist for
David's Soul Power tour two years ago.
‘The Stage is my Oyster’
Dennis teamed up with James Boyle and
The Ragged Tigers and featured in both
the annual Penang Island Jazz Festival
in 2006 and 2007 and also the Genting
International Jazz Festival in 2007.
Dennis regularly performs by invitation
as a solo violinist and also in collaboration
with numerous musicians internationally
around the region at various international
locations including Thailand, Singapore
and Korea. In October 2007, Dennis and
The Ragged Tigers performed by invitation
representing Malaysia at the Gumi Cultural
Jazz Festival in Korea.
‘The Classical Momentous
Moments’
Dennis has performed as a soloist with
the UM Symphony Orchestra in presence
and in honor of the DYMM Sultan Azlan
Shah. Most recently in February 2008,
Dennis dedicated a melody he composed
himself to the DYMM Yang Di Pertuan
Agong Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin ibni
Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al- Muktafi
Billah Shah, in his royal presence,
at a soiree held in His Royal Highness’s
honor hosted by Datuk Patrick Lim. He
again performed his originals for His
Royal Highness the Sultan of Pahang,
Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah in the recent
Univeristy Islamic Antarabangsa 25th
Anniversary Charity fund raising dinner.
He has also held the 1st violin position
for the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth
Orchestra (MPYO) and is now a regular
orchestra secessionist with the RTM
& National Symphony Orchestra, amongst
his involvements with other strings
ensembles.
‘Those who can, teach’
Aside from performing, Dennis contributes
to the evolution of the music industry
through his other passion of teaching.
Dennis partakes time from his extremely
busy and hectic daily schedule to devote
his skills and talent for private teaching
to children at home. The faithful and
dedicated disciples of young, ambitious
and talented youths that diligently
follow his classes, and sometimes also
perform alongside him, are themselves
driven by Dennis’s own passion
for music and what this young man devotes
his hours for. Dennis believes that
a concoction of hard-core practice,
teaching and performing, complement
each other and is what helps him excel.
‘The journey continues’
Dennis credits his successes to his
mother for being the driving force through
his journey of excellent achievements
as a musician, as Mrs. Lau herself is
a piano teacher.
His journey through maturity and the
different musical genres that has swept
across the decades has more recently
affected their influence in his music
through musicians such as Michael Jackson,
Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Wang
Lee Hom, and jazz violinist Christian
Howes.
Dennis also credits his contemporaries
and those he regularly collaborates
with as major forces that have contributed
influence to his musical creativity.
Through different influences of classical,
pop and jazz, Dennis has begun to incorporate
difference elements from these genres
into his latest compositions.
Currently, Dennis is in the process
of completing his maiden album, due
to be released end-2008. This album
is penned and produced by Dennis himself,
and will feature compositions that amalgamates
jazz, pop and the classics. This album
has creatively been tinted with hints
of R&B, jazz and pop, and hip hop
to give a funky, fresh, and modern twist,
yet appealing to easy listeners.
Dennis is using the latest 5 String
Yamaha Electric Violin EV-205.
